About The Event
What a great day for The York River Paddle
Challenge held in Bancroft on July 13th 2013. With sunny Skies and little to no
wind, 77 paddlers took to the water with temperatures peaking at about 28
degrees Celsius. Thanks to all who attended for making this First Annual York
River Paddle Challenge a huge success. We would also like to thank the many
volunteers who made the day run smoothly. In particular THE SOUTH ALGONQUIN
EATERY & PUB, Bancroft for providing food, Beer Garden and music. Chris Grant and
family REMAX BANCROFT provided boat support on Baptiste Lake and ran checkpoint
# 1 at The Baptiste Lake Dam. The Tri County Amateur Ham Radio Operators kept
the communications running smoothly throughout the event enabling us to be
accountable for all the participants. Paluski Boats from Lakefield brought a
truck loaded with boats one of which was donated as a draw prize and a second
Kayak a “spirit” won by Daniel Conroy was donated by Trips & Trails
Adventure Outfitting. A Carbon Fiber kayak paddle was donated by KAYAK SPORT
CANADA as a draw prize and won by Holly Brown. The folks at
MADAWASKA KANU CENTER donated a family raft trip for the 2013 season or a “zero
to hero” course at MKC. And the proud winner was Catherine
Anderson.
Everyone who participates in The York River Challenge is a winner and
that was evident at the awards ceremony where everyone went home with a
“finisher’s” medals and category placing medals and Trophies. Not very often can
you attend an event and go home with two medals a trophy and a new kayak. How
cool is that!!! The “TROUT BUS” ran a shuttle service to and from the main venue
to get participants back to their vehicles and operated throughout the
day.
“We are very excited about the success of this year’s York River
Challenge and the future of this event. There is tons of positive feedback from
all who were involved and the community at large. To see vehicles with boats on
the roof descending on Bancroft is really exciting. To see those boats going
down the York River is even more impressive. Hopefully people will return to
paddle The York on their own after having such a great introduction to what we
believe is a paddler’s paradise.”
